Drew Salyers wins the Ohio Open at Westfield Country Club

WESTFIELD CENTER — Another close finish at the Ohio Open Championship produced a new champion on Wednesday on the South Course at Westfield Country Club.

Drew Salyers, a former All-Big Ten player, won the 103rd Ohio Open by one stroke after the lead changed several times during the final round. He shot 68 (2 under par) in the final round for a 54-hole score of 10 under par (200).

Since 2008, no one has won the Ohio Open by more than two strokes.

Salyers was an All-American at Indiana University. He had rounds of 67-65-68 this week and won the $10,000 top prize.

Jake Scott (66-68-67) of Strongsville, Paul Wackerly (71-64-66) of Minerva and amateur Andrew Bailey (71-62-68) of Shaker Heights finished tied for second place at 9 under 201 strokes.

Bailey, the defending Ohio Open champion, was the top amateur, finishing one stroke ahead of Carson Bellish of Pickerington, a sophomore at Xavier, in an original field of 149 non-professionals.

In the last round, several players fought for the title.

The lead changed hands several times between Salyers, Scott, Bailey and Wackerly. Salyers took control with a birdie on the par-3 No. 11 and a decisive birdie on the 391-yard No. 16. He made an 8-foot putt from behind the hole for birdie on 16.

This was Salyer’s first Ohio Open as a professional. He began the day as one of three players tied for second place, one stroke behind second-round leader Daniel Wetterich, who shot a final-round 71 to tie for fifth with Bellish.

Former Green High School and Ohio State star Maxwell Moldovan, who shared the first-round lead with defending champion Michael Balcar and Ball State senior Ali Khan, was eliminated along with Balcar and Khan midway through the final round.
