Sherrone Moore, Michigan Football, to replace the entire offensive line in 2024

The calendar flips to July and excitement is building for the 2024 college football season. Just three weeks until Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis and a little over a month until fall camps begin across the country.

After arguably the best season in program history, Michigan brings another full squad into 2024 with “Team 145.” In preparation for next year, it’s a good time to break down each of the Wolverines’ position groups with “One thing I like”, “One thing I don’t do” And “One thing to keep an eye on”Next comes the unit that has become the heart of the Wolverines program — Offensive line.

Michigan has been incredibly clever at rotating players along the offensive line for years. The Wolverines will replace all five O-line starters from last season, and yet four guys who are scheduled to start in 2024 (LT – Myles Hinton; C- Greg Crippen; RG – Giovanni El-Hadi; RT- Andrew Gentry) have each played many snaps as backup in recent years. Michigan also brought in the transfer player from Northwestern Josh Priebewho was an All-Big Ten selection last season and is expected to start at left guard for the Wolverines this season.

Since current head coach Sherrone Moore took over the offensive line prior to the 2021 season, this unit has been the backbone of the program. We can only expect it to continue that way now that Moore is head coach and his position is being taken over by a rising star in the coaching ranks, former UM offensive Grant Newsomethe program’s tight ends coach for the past two seasons.

Not only did Michigan lose all five of its O-line starters from last year’s team, but the Wolverines’ top six offensive players in terms of number of snaps are all moving on to the pro league. No matter how good a program is or was, that’s a concern. Although Michigan returns a surprising amount of experience among its projected starters (given an entirely new front five), it will impact the Wolverines’ depth in the trenches.

If Michigan stays healthy up front, this can be another very strong unit for the Wolverines. If UM loses a player or two, especially at the tackle position, they could be in trouble. That said, Michigan has done an excellent job of recruiting and developing this position group over the past few seasons.

While we’re fairly certain that Hinton, Priebe, Crippen and El-Hadi will start from left to right on the offensive line, the battle for the starting right tackle spot will be interesting to watch in fall camp. Gentry is the favorite after playing in seven games for the Wolverines a year ago, but he could face pressure from redshirt junior. Tristan Bounds and graduate senior Jeffrey Persi. Competition is a good thing – “iron sharpens iron,” as Jim Harbaugh used to say, and the fight for the best jobs often leads to overall improvements.

Another thing to watch is how often Michigan uses six or even seven offensive linemen, as it sometimes did in years past under Harbaugh. As a former offensive lineman himself, it’s not hard to imagine Moore wanting to play “bully ball” in the same way Harbaugh liked to. Moore was also the program’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, so it will be interesting to see what looks familiar and what new subtleties Moore and new OC Kirk Campbell will introduce this year.
