Classroom Safari

Last week, Bonnie Cromwell’s Classroom Safari presented a safari animal presentation to over 80 attentive children at the Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah. All eyes were on an alligator, desert fox, armadillo, spotted cat, coral snake, hedgehog, mountain goat and sloth. The children were curious and asked many questions as Bonnie explained the animals’ history, origins, region, habitat and food chain.

Classroom Safari is just one of many program presentations being offered at the Boys & Girls Club this summer. CEO Julie Whalen shared, “We are excited to partner with local businesses and organizations to offer workshops and improve the quality of programs at the Boys & Girls Club.”

Mendocino County Public Health/Cal-Fresh offers a series of Food Smart nutrition workshops that include health and wellness and active play. WOW Smiles provides 100 toothbrushes and teaches children the importance of good oral hygiene and offers free consultations. West America Bank brings Junior Achievement to the club to work with youth on “real-world budgeting for teens” and teach them the basics of money and finance.

Over 20 students in grades 3-5 learned the CRM (Community Resiliency Model) from First 5 Mendocino. The CRM curriculum teaches students the tools and skills for stress management and resilience.

The club aims to continue to offer quality programming opportunities such as music, art, sports teams and field trips. “To achieve these goals, we are constantly looking for volunteers and funders. Quality programs and activities also come at a high cost. Our business partnerships, sponsors and donations from the community are critical to maintaining the afterschool program and providing quality services to the children and families of Ukiah.

“Currently, the UUSD Summer Nutrition Program provides 80-90 students with a nutritious breakfast and lunch daily. However, we need the community’s help to provide 80-90 afternoon snacks daily through August 9th. We thank the South Ukiah Rotary Club and the Kiwanis for their time and effort in preparing healthy snacks for the children. We hope that local restaurants will sponsor a snack day as they have in past summers.”
