“First Take” star Chris Russo hints that Stephen A. Smith is free until October and promises to step in as “executive producer”

FIRST Take star Chris “Mad Dog” Russo made humorous comments about Stephen A. Smith’s status during the TV sports debate.

Russo appeared on Wednesday’s edition of First Take, while Smith remains off the show.

First Take presenter Molly Qerim began her Summer break on Monday, as Smith announced the same day that he and co-star Shannon Sharpe would be on vacation starting Tuesday.

“Molly was a day ahead of us,” he joked.

The fiery Russo appeared on the show in his usual Wednesday role and was tasked with delivering a cold opener.

Russo mocked Stephen A’s absence at First Take and suggested next The ESPN star will be appearing on the show again.

“We will not see you who until the NBA begin in October,” Russo said.

“So Draymond Greento get used to something.

“In this show I am responsible for the next three months.

Russo also joked that he would be “the executive producer” of First Take.

After introducing the show’s guests on Wednesday, Russo comically let slip the name “First Take.”

“As Stevie A. says, First House – what’s the name of the show!? – First Take in the house,” he said, twirling his finger in the air.

NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins, broadcaster Brian Custer and ESPN radioChris Carlin was also on the show.

Russo took over as moderator since Christine Williamson had taken over this task the day before.

“First Take” has enjoyed outstanding ratings since Sharpe signed on as the show’s star last September.

First Take recently celebrated its 21st consecutive month of increasing viewership.

In April, First Take saw a 12 percent increase year-over-year, averaging 482,000 viewers, according to ESPN PR.

Qerim and Stephen A. have been appearing together on the show since 2015.

Viewership of First Take

First Take has gone from strength to strength over the past year under the leadership of Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim.

ESPN’s weekday debate show averaged 496,000 viewers in 2023, making it the most-watched year in the show’s history.

The December average of 611,000 represented an increase of 24% over the same period last year.

Additionally, the show has been viewed over 250 million times on YouTube.

First Take benefited from the signing of Shannon Sharpe alongside Smith and Qerim after he left Undisputed from Fox Sports.

The latter is reportedly looking for a new contract.

Smith’s contract with ESPN runs until the end of 2025.

According to reports, the 56-year-old is hoping for a $25 million salary in his next contract.
