The creator of Final Fantasy has no interest in returning to the series

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said he had no interest in returning to the series after partnering with Square Enix for the PC and console versions of Fantasian, a game that was previously only available on mobile devices.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sakaguchi said he is now a consumer of the Final Fantasy series, especially Final Fantasy XIV. He doesn’t want to know how the series’ games are made now, as he feels it would affect his enjoyment of the game. “If I pick up the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I can really enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much,” he explained.

Sakaguchi also said that his studio Mistwalker is working on a new game and is in the process of finalizing its story. Mistwalker’s previous games include cult classics such as Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon for PC and Xbox 360. However, Sakaguchi said he has no interest in bringing them to new platforms either. Good news, though: Both games are playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility.

Fantasian was first released for Apple Arcade in 2021. The updated version, Fantasian: Neo Dimension, will be released this winter for PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox. The game has a score of 80 on GameSpot’s sister site, Metacritic.
