GT-S Series: Onewheel launches its smartest, fastest and most powerful off-road board

GT-S Series: Onewheel launches its smartest, fastest and most powerful off-road board

Many people have heard of a team called Onewheel, and there are plenty of reasons for that. After all, this American-born crew is so successful that there is even an ESPN-hosted sporting event featuring their machines. Now, they have just unveiled their latest machine, the GT S-Series, an incredible and incredibly powerful Onewheel that is sure to put a smile on people’s faces.

Ladies and gentlemen and lovers of all things board related, lend me your eyes for the next few minutes so we can learn about Onewheels and their recently introduced GT S series, a Onewheel gem that takes an existing crowd favorite and beefs it up even more!

The story of the S-Series begins with none other than US-based company Onewheel, a crew that was already tinkering with this design before 2008. After all, that was the year their first prototype appeared. It was a chain-driven wheel that sat in the middle of a running board, and years later that crew went electric, coming up with something completely different. All of which brings us to the S-Series.

First, let me point out that the S-Series isn’t just an updated Onewheel; it’s a completely redesigned machine with features that make it lighter, faster, stronger, and more balanced than previous generations.

It all starts with the presence of something called “recurve rails.” By reshaping the Onewheel’s footboard, more leverage and control are now possible, not to mention comfort, and without sacrificing ground clearance.

Part two of the story looks at all the changes to the powertrain. First of all, the S-Series runs on 113V, and according to the manufacturer, that’s 50% more voltage and therefore power than before. However, this is only possible with an updated motor that uses neodymium magnets for maximum torque and acceleration.

Compared to the standard GT model, the S-Series can produce twice as much torque at the same speed. Add to that Japanese NSK bearings to ensure as little friction as possible, and that’s the basis for the S-Series. All of that is good for a top speed of 25 mph, so if you want more speed, you might have to sign up for one of those ESPN events.

Next we need to address the battery and BMS. Why? By “re-engineering” the battery, BMS and power stage, Onewheel was able to shave a whopping 2 pounds off their existing design. In total, that’s all you’ll ever be lugging around.

With the new battery and systems, you can travel 400 km with maximum range, but of course this depends on the terrain you are driving on. If the battery is empty, you will have to drive on the side of the road for up to 150 minutes. However, with an optional Hypercharger, 80 minutes is enough.

Another aspect of the mechanics that deserves some light is the wheel, the heart of every Onewheel machine. A big difference between the S-Series and the other models is the central motor housing. Because Onewheel managed to reduce the size of this component, they were able to fit a larger tire, making our rides more comfortable. They also tinkered with tire width, tread and composite to find the proverbial sweet spot between comfort and performance.

Now we live in a modern age with modern solutions, but most importantly, of course, there is an app for that. But there is a nice trick to access the Onewheel app: you can EVPerformance. You can control the acceleration levels, how much the board compensates when cornering, and even how hard it brakes. Basically, it doesn’t matter if you’ve ridden a Onewheel before; it can be customized to your abilities.

There’s just one small catch to all the magic I mentioned above. According to the product pages, some of the above features are dependent on the package you ultimately choose during checkout. For example, there’s a standard S-Series that doesn’t include the recurve rail, smaller motor hub and upgraded tire. The first package starts at $2,900 (€2,700 at the current exchange rate) and the fully upgraded option costs $3,500 (€3,250). Be sure to check out all the other packages Onewheel offers if you’re looking for extra gear like a fender. The latter might be a good idea until you get the hang of it.

I understand it’s difficult to judge if the S-Series is right for you, but there are solutions. You can find an outdoor sporting goods supplier authorized to supply these in your area and take them for a spin. The best part is that there are dealers all over the world, so it’s almost impossible to miss them. Or just go straight to the source and stick with the warranty offer if it’s not for you. Take care of yourself and wear a helmet.
