The NTT IndyCar Series heads east to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for a historic weekend.

After a thrilling round at Laguna Seca, where Alex Palou emerged victorious from a battle against Colton Herta, the series now turns its sights to Ohio for the ninth race weekend of the 2024 season, which holds special significance as it marks the highly anticipated debut of the IndyCar Series’ hybrid engine.

After 18 months of careful development and rigorous testing by Honda and Chevrolet engineers and IndyCar personnel, the hybrid unit is finally making its first competitive debut in the series. It features an initial power increase of approximately 60 horsepower and is designed to enhance racing action and make the series even more competitive.

The current 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine will be paired with a motor-generator unit (MGU) and a supercapacitor energy storage system (ESS) with a capacity of 320 kilojoules per lap, both of which fit into the bell housing located between the internal combustion engine and the transmission.

This new unit also features an additional “push-to-pass” overtaking option, providing more overtaking opportunities.
