At least 53 people were injured in the attack, four were in serious condition, the governor said.

According to official reports, at least five people were killed and dozens injured in a Russian missile and drone attack in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy then called on Western countries to provide more air defense systems and long-range weapons.

Video footage of Wednesday’s attack, which Zelensky posted on Telegram, showed a massive explosion in the sky, followed by a fireball shooting toward the ground. The president confirmed that five people were killed and a 14-year-old was among the injured.

At least 53 people were injured in the attack, four of them in serious condition, said Serhiy Lysak, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Russia denies carrying out attacks on civilians or civilian infrastructure. Thousands of civilians have been killed since Russia began its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“This Russian terror can only be stopped by modern air defenses and our long-range weapons,” said Zelensky. “The world can protect lives, and all it takes is the determination of the heads of state and government.”

Borys Filatov, the city’s mayor, declared Thursday a day of mourning.

He said on Telegram that the attack damaged kindergartens, schools and hospitals and caused fires across the city. Commercial buildings were also damaged, officials said.

He published pictures of rescue workers clearing away broken glass and extinguishing fires.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces had attacked the Dnipropetrovsk region with seven missiles and five Shahed drones. The air defense was able to shoot down five missiles and all drones, it said.

Russia has intensified its air strikes on Ukrainian cities in recent months as its forces have tried to advance, particularly targeting power plants, causing widespread blackouts.
