Official launch of Authors Against Book Bans

Following an announcement earlier this year, Authors Against Book Bans (AABB) was officially launched on June 26. Comprised of authors, illustrators, and writers in the fields of children’s and adult literature, AABB aims to unite authors at the national and local level to support grassroots initiatives against book bans and protests across the United States.

Author and AABB national leadership team member Maggie Tokuda-Hall said in the press release, “We know that the number of book bans is increasing exponentially across the country. From Idaho and Utah to California and New York City, the appeals are specifically targeting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors.”

In addition, David Levithan, a member of AABB’s national leadership team, emphasized the importance of defending reading freedom: “Authors understand the profound impact of books. The freedom to read and choose books for ourselves and our families is vital to the vitality of our communities. It is time for authors to stand together in solidarity on this issue.”

With 1,500 members in every state, AABB is committed to providing support and encouragement to educators, librarians, parents, and students facing censorship. They also advocate for censorship at the legislative level and work with established organizations such as PEN America and We Need Diverse Books.

Levithan continued, explaining that part of AABB’s strategy is to join forces with grassroots leaders: “We are building an ‘Author Army’ to support those on the front lines of this fight. Our goal is to boost morale among underserved authors, educators, librarians, parents and students by showing them that they are not alone.”

The official launch of the AABB coincided with the American Library Association’s 2024 Annual Conference in San Diego, which took place June 27-July 2 and included the Rally for the Right to Read.
