Dashcam video: Chase in Central Michigan

LANSING, Michigan (WLNS) — A dashboard camera shows state police and sheriff’s deputies pursuing a stolen truck in mid-Michigan on Tuesday. The suspected driver frequently drove in the wrong lane, narrowly avoided crashes and reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

It was the third chase of the day for the same suspect, authorities say – the first two were in County Inghambut the officers gave up the pursuit twice because it was too dangerous. The third pursuit picked up in neighboring Livingston County after the suspect, according to authorities, abandoned the sedan he was driving and forced a homeowner to give her the keys to her white GMC pickup truck.

Video clips released by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department show Michigan State Police troopers pursuing the 60-year-old Genesee County man in the stolen truck in an attempt to stop him.

The driver’s side tires can be seen falling off the truck as it weaves through traffic, having been damaged by spike barriers officers had set up. One officer can be heard describing “heavy smoke” trailing behind the truck.

As the video continues, the truck is traveling in the oncoming lane and the driver narrowly avoids a head-on collision with a semi-truck. He was pursued through a shopping district and narrowly avoided a side-on collision with a second semi-truck.

The video shows the truck traveling in the far right lane of the road before the driver lost control and skidded through traffic, including in front of the patrol car. The truck then collided head-on with an SUV.

The video shows officers bringing the people in the SUV to safety and then arresting the man.

The driver was hospitalized after the crash with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities in Ingham and Livingston counties said they would file charges against him.
