A month after the death of conservative activist Shawn McBreairty, two lawsuits he filed may come to light.
Shawn McBreairty, 53, committed suicide on June 3. He had sued Regional School Unit 22 and the Brewer School Department in two separate lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Bangor.
McBreairty’s attorney, Marc Randazza, filed a “proposal for death” in both lawsuits on Tuesday. He officially says McBreairty has died. That does not mean the lawsuits are dismissed. A new plaintiff can be appointed at a later date, the lawsuit says. A motion to appoint a new plaintiff must be filed by Sept. 30, according to court documents.
McBreairty sued RSU 22 Board Chairman Heath Miller and members of the school board in March 2023, claiming his right to free speech was being restricted.
In February, he also sued Brewer School Superintendent Gregg Palmer, Brewer High School Principal Brent Slowikowski and Michelle MacDonald, an English teacher at the school, saying Brewer High School students should be allowed to petition the school to overturn its transgender bathroom policy.
