The beauty of summer is here – The Voice

THE BEAUTY OF SUMMER IS HERE: Colors in all shades between flowers, budding trees and bushes, the many shades of blue of Lake St. Clair, the vast cloud formations, the leafy branches swaying in the wind and our magnificent American flag. Free and beautiful.

JULY 4TH INDEPENDENCE DAY: Tomorrow! Raise Old Glory! Celebrate! In our country, this is the day to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. To celebrate, ring the Liberty Bell on the lawn in front of VFW Post 7573 at 12 noon. It is located at 35011 23 Mile in Our Town. Be there to ring the bell and join others in holding a very long rope. There will be food and drinks inside afterward. The bell has a long history in Our Town. It was once a school bell, but was preserved and is rung at VFW every year on our country’s birthday. Happy Birthday, USA!

JULY 6: USED BOOKS GIVEAWAY: The MacDonald Public Library at Main and Bedford will be hosting an event to accept donations of books and money on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit special events and items for new programs to be created.

FUN AT THE IC PERCH FESTIVAL JULY 12-13: From 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., guests are welcome to enjoy food, music, games and lots of fun at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, located at the corner of M-29/Dixie Highway and Church Road in Anchorville. Blankets of Care will also be holding events there. For more information, call the church office at 586-725-3051. Come to Anchorville and meet friends to celebrate at the IC Perch Festival. See you there! The graduating class of 1974 at Anchor Bay High School will celebrate its 50th class reunion at the IC Festival. Wear red! White! Meet the Tars of 1974!

JULY 13 SPAGHETTI DINNER: From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 6801 Maria and Green in Our Town, Our Town invites you to dine with friends in a convivial atmosphere where conversation continues even as you eat. Admission is $18 for an adult and $5 for children for a delicious dinner of pasta with or without meat, an additional appetizer, salad, garlic toast, dessert and beverage. This is not to be missed.

JULY 19 VFW STEAK-OUT: Located at 35011 23 Mile, grilling hours are 5:30-7:30 p.m. For $18 per person, grill a New York strip steak over hot coals, served with baked potatoes, salad, rolls and dessert.

REGISTER BY JULY 19 FOR VBS: Vacation Bible School can be part of a child’s summer program July 23-25 ​​in Our Town. Beginning at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 6801 Maria, corner of Green, an excellent program is planned between two local churches, First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred, 586-725-0909, and St. John’s Lutheran Church 6801 Maria, 586-725-6801. Please register your child by July 19 at one of the phone numbers listed above. Entitled “Camp Firelight,” a summer camp: An Adventure with God, children ages 3 to 6 are invited. Bible stories, songs to sing with Mrs. C., games and snacks will be part of the day. The churches share backyards and have been friends since the 1860s. Note: First Congregational Church is the oldest church in our city and St. John’s Lutheran is almost the oldest as well.

JULY 29-AUGUST 2: Christ, the King Lutheran Church, 29920 23 Mile, Chesterfield, will host a Vacation Bible School program for children ages 3 through 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The church is located behind the All Insurance building, east of Interstate 94. The program is called “WildLIVE, Showcasing the Character of Christ.” Children can enjoy Bible stories, puppet shows, crafts, games, bounce houses, outdoor activities, singing and snacks. Register as soon as possible by calling or texting Sandy at 810-335-1442.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH SHIRLEY ON JULY 30: To Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek. You’ll travel with friends in a Bianco Tours motorcoach. Shirley will be waiting for your reservation. You can reach her at 586-531-1934. The fee is $50 per person for transportation, driver tip, movie, small snack and bottled water on the way home. Meet her and other travelers at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot of Lowes, 27990 23 Mile, Chesterfield, for departure at 8 a.m. The casino will offer $20 card games and a $5 meal coupon. When you reach 55 points, stop by the kiosk and you may get another $10 to play with. You’ll leave the casino at 4:30 p.m. and arrive back home around 7:30 p.m. Good luck!

ANTIQUES FLEA MARKET AUGUST 8-10: Starting in our state’s “Tip of the Thumb,” the New Baltimore Lions Club’s Relay For Life team will be participating here in Our Town on the grounds of City Hall in Green from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations for the flea market can be dropped off at two locations: 51145 Clay and 53540 Grace. Clothing will not be accepted. Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. As for the Antique Yard Sale Trail, the event follows M-25 along Lake Huron to Port Huron and then M-29 along the St. Clair River on M-29 to Lake St. Clair to Our Town. Many drive the entire way and enjoy the sales on both sides of the road. It can be an adventure. Something to do. For more information, please contact Flo at 586-725-4690.

SEPTEMBER 21 SCRAPBOOKING FUNDRAISER: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 31000 23 Mile, Chesterfield. Early registration is requested, cost is $25 per person through August 21, after which the fee is $30, all non-refundable. The day includes crafts, lunch, dessert and refreshments. There will also be vendors, a basket party, prizes and the grand prize is a weekend at the Four Season Scrap Inn in Emmet. Proceeds will go to Good Shepherd Church. DONATIONS OF BEVERAGE CONTAINERS ACCEPTED: The New Baltimore Lions Club will be waiting for clean, empty containers outside the Champion Health Club at Premier Mall in Chesterfield on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. A Lions Club member will be on site with a pickup truck to accept your donations. The Leader Dogs for the Blind facility in Rochester will benefit from the collection to support their work. In addition, blind children will be able to experience summer camp. Thank you for supporting the work of local Lions, part of the Lions Clubs of America.

CONSIDER PANTRY NEEDS: St. Mary’s Pantry on Main Street is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Located on the block of Main Street, Maria Street, Front Street and Base Street, the following items are needed and donations are gratefully accepted: Sloppy Joe Mix, granola bars, soap, saltine crackers, egg noodles, juice and for babies, diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6 and wipes.

NEW BRICKS AVAILABLE FOR ORDER SOON: Project Manager Ron Earle, a member of the New Baltimore Lions Club, will be happy to read your word order and then arrange for the brick/paver to be etched. Order forms are available at the MacDonald Public Library, on Main and Bedford Streets, at Our Town City Hall on Green Street, and on the New Baltimore Lions Club website. Proceeds of $125 each will allow for the preservation of the flag and the 160-foot pole that will fly a 30-by-60-foot American flag over the bricks on the Anchor Bay shore. With your word choice, there is room on the brick/paver for three lines of 14 characters. Stop by sometime and read the ones already planted. Add your own story and receive a form.

THE MUSEUM IS OPEN SATURDAYS: The Grand Pacific House Museum, 51065 Washington, is open from noon to 3 p.m. Docents guide visitors through the historic building. Bring your family, as there are items all ages will want to see and explore.
