A York man was charged with murder in the death of a state prison inmate in Cumberland County on Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Shaquille Tyrin Gibson, 30, of York was the cellmate of the deceased 57-year-old Bernard Grover, also known as Kevin Beattie, of Philadelphia, state police said in a news release.

Staff at Camp Hill State Correctional Facility found Grover unconscious in his bunk, state police said.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, staff performed life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived and continued life support. Beattie was pronounced dead at 8:16 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers arrived at the jail to investigate the death and found Grover had sustained injuries, state police said. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

“It has been learned that Gibson and Grover were cellmates at the time of the murder,” a state police press release said.

An autopsy will be performed at a later date to determine the cause and manner of death, state police said.

Gibson will remain in the state prison in Cumberland County but will later be transferred to another facility in accordance with Department of Corrections policy, state police said.

Beattie was convicted of burglary in Philadelphia County and was serving a sentence of 22 to 55 years at the time of his death, the state Department of Corrections said in a news release. He had been in prison since February 2023.
