Spurs’ win rate should improve with the signing of Chris Paul

Chris Paul is often referred to as “The Point God.” But it’s not just his personal skills on the field. Wherever CP3 went, he made the teams he joined better.

Paul (like our newest draft acquisition Stephon Castle) was selected fourth overall by the New Orleans Hornets in 2005.

He played for the Hornets for the first six seasons and helped increase their win percentage from 22% to 46.3%.

But his first team is not his only success. Paul makes everyone around him better.

A post on Reddit titled “The CP3 Effect” clearly illustrates its impact.

From the Los Angeles Clippers, where he formed “Lob City” with DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin and made their way to the postseason in each of Paul’s six seasons.

After moving to Houston, CP3 elevated the already impressive James Harden and the Rockets to a level where they nearly beat the championship-caliber Golden State Warriors. Had Paul not been injured, the Rockets may have made it to the NBA Finals.

Paul continued his reign in OKC, where he was traded for Russell Westbrook. The Thunder were expected to be relegated, but Paul’s impressive play secured Oklahoma City fifth place and the Thunder took his former Rockets team to a seventh game. Although they lost, Paul shone as Sports illustrated to call his time in OKC a success, stating that he has “re-established himself as one of the best point guards in the NBA.”

In 2020, Paul joined the Phoenix Suns and helped them reach the NBA Finals, his first ever trip after so many years with the team.

Last year, he joined the Golden State Warriors and, even in a minor role and due to statistical lows, managed to raise the bar in San Francisco.

With the Spurs coming off a 22-60 season, it’s very likely that their win percentage will improve after a year of adjustment under Victor Wembanyama.

But given the incredible numbers Paul has brought to every team he joins, it’s remarkable how much better the San Antonio Spurs are with him this season.
