Business facilities’ 20th Yearly Ranking report – which identifies leading locations for industries and assists with site selection – has once again named Michigan the nation’s best state for the automotive industry, also giving the state top rankings in life sciences, semiconductors, electric vehicle investment, customized workforce training and more.

“This is a reiteration of the state’s performance in this category with significant investments in 2023 to strengthen a robust mobility ecosystem,” the report said.

Michigan was also named one of the top 10 states for the semiconductor industry thanks to investments by several companies and initiatives to develop talent for the industry, such as Michigan Semiconductor Talent and Technology for Automotive Research (MSTAR), a public-private initiative designed to make the state a global leader in semiconductor technology and automotive talent.

Michigan also achieved Top 10 status for customized employee training from Business Facilities, building on another award for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Talent Action Team, which recently received global recognition as the No. 4 most innovative business services provider in the world, according to a ranking by Fast Company.

Business Facilities also recognized Grand Rapids as one of the three mid-sized metros in the country with the best business climate (along with Arlington, VA and Fort Lauderdale, FL), while Tech Talent Leaders recognized Detroit as the nation’s best city (mid-sized talent pool), outperforming Austin, TX and Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN.

Michigan No. 1 for clean energy investments

In addition to the Business Facilities rankings, Climate Power has again named Michigan No. 1 for clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act. This is the second year in a row that Michigan has held the top spot.

“Michigan is proud to capitalize on the job creation opportunities created by federal policy that will benefit current and future residents, businesses of all sizes, and the communities that make Michigan great,” said MEDC CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr. “Our unwavering commitment to leveraging these investments will make Michigan a leading location for advanced manufacturing and create a robust economy where everyone can ‘Make in Michigan’ in a climate-sustainable way for generations to come.”

The Climate Power report shows that Michigan secured 58 projects, securing nearly $25.4 billion in investment and 21,490 jobs, surpassing Texas, Georgia, California and South Carolina as the top five states with the most projects.

Projects listed in the report include:

The report also showed that Michigan ranked second in the nation in locating projects in low-income communities, with 24 of the 58 projects representing approximately $11.7 billion in investments and 14,306 jobs.

Climate Power’s report comes hot on the heels of other clean energy accolades for Michigan, including being selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to help fund large-scale clean energy technologies in Michigan.

The Inflation Reduction Act was signed by President Joe Biden in 2022 with the aim of promoting the growth of the green economy in the United States.
