Iberville residents raise concerns about bridge repairs and demand state support

IBERVILLE PARISH, Louisiana (WAFB) – At a meeting on July 2, state and Iberville Parish officials invited residents to voice their concerns and discuss the latest status of repairs to the Grosse Tete Bridge.

Many residents expressed frustration and asked questions about possible shuttle services, extended ferry hours and ferry accessibility for all.

Most residents are satisfied with the support they have received from local authorities, but many expect answers and accountability from the LA Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD).

“We’re going to work with the DOTD long-term to see if we can do something to get funding for this because this is a vital artery. This is an evacuation route,” says Parish President Chris Daigle.

One woman, Jennifer Payton, has lived in the area for two years. She says she has not been able to use the pedestrian ferry because she needs a wheelchair.

When you try to get through the rocks, you can’t roll through. To get on the boat, you have to be somewhat agile because you have to get on it and it moves. So me and everyone else have to drive all the way around in that position,” Payton says.

For Payton and many others, that means either spending more money on gas or staying home all day. Payton says she appreciates the effort but worries these issues aren’t being resolved quickly enough.

“I’m going to give them a chance. We’re all trying to figure it out right now, but rest assured I’ll get there and remind them I’m still here,” Payton says.

Authorities still expect the bridge repairs to take about four to six months, but until then the focus is on ensuring that all residents have a pleasant stay.
