Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz couldn’t have timed his right-handed home run better in the fifth inning Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Chris Welsh, an analyst with Bally Sports Ohio, explained that Reds fans will have to be patient with De La Cruz’s switch-hitting.

“I think the more reps he gets, the more he’ll show us what the finished product looks like,” Welsh said during the 5th inning of the broadcast. “I think we’re a long way from that. Incredibly talented on both sides of the plate, a lot of power. I say to everyone who says, ‘Let’s just let him hit left-handed,’ let’s give him some time.”

Two seconds later, Elly hit a two-run home run, his 15th of the season and his fourth from the right side.

“Maybe New York City is just his kind of city,” Welsh said. “He’s starting to show some doubters, is he right-handed and does he have power from the right side? He can check that off.”

De La Cruz hit a triple earlier in the game.
