Back to Cephiro: Clamp anime celebrates 30th anniversary.

Last week, the big news in the anime world was the announcement of a new anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma1/2. However, 90s nostalgia is still high as another beloved classic is also getting a new anime, and this time it is Magic Knight Rayearth.

Starting as a manga in November 1993 by the creative team Clamp, Rayearth made the jump to an anime TV series less than a year later, which premiered in October 1994 and ran for 49 consecutive episodes. Although it is a shojo series (for girls), Rayearth is also an isekai fantasy adventure series that borrows its world building blocks liberally from role-playing games, and the mix of personal emotional drama, spectacular action sequences, and blatantly frequent visual gags where the cast gets super deformed gave Rayearth a very broad appeal, which made it one of the first major success stories for a shojo anime series among anime fans in the English-speaking world in the mid-1990s.

“30 years after the anime TV series aired, you will see it again,” promises the teaser video, with “they” undoubtedly referring to the three ordinary schoolgirls whose paths cross on separate excursions to Tokyo Tower before they are kidnapped to the magical land of Cephiro: main protagonist Hikaru

…emotionally Umi

…and gently Fuu.

The video contains images from the original manga and TV series (though not the 1997 alternate continuity OVA series). As long-time anime fans will see, Rayearths The character designs are very indicative of their mid-90s origins, and the teaser only shows the core trio from behind, saving the new facial designs for a later reveal. The orchestral background music also gives no indication as to whether J-pop singer Naomi Tamura’s original opening theme “Yuzurenai Negai” is coming back, or if the opening animation is for the new RayearthIf it is a television series, it will again be the legendary action director Masami Obari. But with the original Rayearth Since the television series ends about half a year before the manga’s finale, it is likely that the new anime will be a more faithful/complete adaptation of the source material.
