Upcoming book on AI and democracy

Upcoming book on AI and democracy

If you read my blog, you’ve noticed that I’ve written a lot about AI and democracy, mostly with my co-author Nathan Sanders. I’m excited to announce that we’re writing a book on the subject.

This isn’t a book about deep fakes or misinformation. It’s a book about what happens when AI writes laws, mediates disputes, audits bureaucratic processes, helps with political strategy, and advises citizens on which candidates and issues to support. It’s a book that tries to explore what an AI-powered democratic system might look like, and then how we can best ensure we leverage the good parts and avoid the bad.

I talked about this in my speech at the RSA conference last month, which you can watch and read. (You can also read previous attempts at this idea.)

The book will be published by MIT Press sometime in fall 2025, with a free-access digital version available a year later. (It can’t actually come out any sooner. Nothing published this year will drown out the hubbub of the U.S. presidential election, and anything published next spring will have to go to press without knowing the outcome of that election.)

The book is currently divided into six parts:

AI-supported politicians
AI-powered legislators
AI-supported administration
The AI-supported legal system
AI-powered citizens
Getting the future we want

It’s too early to post a more detailed table of contents, but I’d love some help thinking of titles. Below is my current list of brainstorming ideas: titles and subtitles. Please mix them up as you wish, or suggest your own in the comments. No idea is too far-fetched, as anything can spark more ideas.
