Bette Midler criticizes the Supreme Court with her parody song “The Wizard of Oz”

Bette Midler takes the Yellow Brick Road to seek justice.

The Grammy and Tony Award winner took to social media on Tuesday (July 2) to share a The Wizard of Oz Parody song denouncing several Supreme Court justices, including Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh.

“Neil and Brett, you spiteful judges/ Us girls hold a grudge/ Keep church and state apart/ You could be less disruptive in all reproductive matters/ If only you had a heart,” she sings in the track written by Eric Kornfeld and directed by Marc Shaiman.

“Thumbs down for autocracy!! #VoteBlue2024ProtectDemocracy,” she captioned the post.

Midler has long been an outspoken liberal and critic of Trump, but even she found herself in trouble in 2022 for making what some perceived as transphobic comments on Twitter following the Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe v. Wade ruling. At the time, the controversy sparked a discussion about the importance of inclusive language, and the Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner insisted her remarks were not intended to be “exclusionary or transphobic.”

“The truth is, democracy is slipping away from us! I am all for saving democracy for ALL PEOPLE. We must unite because – in case you haven’t been paying attention – divided we will definitely perish,” she remarked at the time.
