LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 1-year-old boy died after taking fentanyl, prompting prosecutors to charge his mother with first-degree murder, documents say.

According to the documents, 31-year-old Kiera McCall is accused of the death of her son Mathias McCall.

On June 6, 2023, paramedics were called to a residence near Lake Mead and Nellis boulevards for a report of an unresponsive child. Three days later, Mathias died in the hospital. The Clark County coroner’s office determined he died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, a spokesperson said. His cause of death was ruled an accident.

A witness told officers who responded to the first 911 call that McCall appeared “high” while paramedics were caring for her son and said that “the baby under the bed may have taken some heroin,” documents say.

In an interview with police, McCall said she uses marijuana and edibles, but not in the house, documents say. She also denied having drugs in the apartment, but said she had previously used heroin.

“When asked about other narcotics, she said her roommate was using heroin,” the documents state. “Kiera stated that she had previously found small pieces of heroin in the house and swept them away while cleaning.” During an interview with police, the roommate denied using heroin.

After obtaining a search warrant, police searched the apartment and found several items with suspected drug residue, a pipe and other drug paraphernalia, documents say.

Police did not provide any further details about how they believe the child obtained fentanyl, but suspect that McCall was the only person who could have made it available to him, the documents say.

According to a now-closed GoFundMe page, Machias’ organs were used to save the lives of other children.

Metro police arrested McCall on Wednesday, June 26, more than a year after her son’s death, records show. During McCall’s hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court on Tuesday, Judge Rebecca Saxe declined to set bail. McCall did not appear in court, although she was scheduled to appear on Tuesday, due to health reasons. The hearing was rescheduled for July 9.

In 2023, 302 people died from a fentanyl overdose in Clark County, a 28% increase from 2022.
