Sydney Sweeney is one of the hottest stars in the world right now, whether she’s in a fan-favorite co-starring relationship with Glen Powell or delivering one of the wildest horror movie endings of 2024. Almost every project she’s involved in immediately generates a lot of interest, but the news that Sweeney might be moving into the sci-fi world for a new project, Barbarella The kind of news that made a movie could set the Internet on fire with a futuristic-looking weapon.

What is the release date of Barbarella?
At this point, no one can guess when we will have a new Barbarella Film that is sophisticated enough to be released in cinemas. Sydney Sweeney’s first confirmation of the lead role in Barbarella was coming back in 2022, and the wheels on the project have only recently started turning in Hollywood. However, even recent progress doesn’t provide any indication of how long it will take to begin filming the new flick, let alone prepare for a merchandise-filled theatrical release.

BarbarellaIf the other creative elements come together quickly, she probably won’t be available to film the adaptation until 2025 at the earliest. Add in the extended post-production that will likely be necessary for all the digital effects a major sci-fi blockbuster would require, and we’re probably looking at a film that might not come out until summer 2026. If anything takes longer, or other film projects are pushed forward with the cast or crew, we’ll have to wait even longer.
Sydney Sweetney will lead the Barbarella cast
At this time, only one cast member was selected for the new Barbarella film, and that is Sydney Sweeney herself for the title role. It will be Sweeney’s first big jump into a genre franchise outside of Madame Webwhich didn’t work out so well.
Furthermore, we don’t necessarily know what the new movie is about, and it’s difficult to even guess who might star in the film since we don’t know which characters appear in the script.
There are some characters from the original French comic that appeared in the previous film adaptation. Professor Ping, an elderly man who helps Barbarella, a blind “angel” named Pygar, and the villain the Black Queen all appear in the 1968 film, so there’s a good chance they’ll appear in the new version as well. Especially if the new film turns out to be a remake of the original film rather than a completely new adaptation of the source material.
Who will direct “Barbarella”?
No official director has yet been appointed for the new Barbarella Film, but Deadline reports that A night in SoHo And Baby Driver Director Edgar Wright was approached by Sony and entered into talks to direct. Wright agreed to help with early development, but did not commit to directing the project.
Edgar Wright is certainly not a bad choice. He dealt with science fiction in The end of the world and his hyper-stylized interpretation of another comic adaptation Scott Pilgrim against the World could be exactly what a new perspective on Barbarella needs. When Wright comes on board, Barbarella would probably have to wait until he starts writing and directing his adaptation of Stephen King’s The running manin which Sydney Sweeney’s rom-com partner Glen Powell plays the lead role.
Who writes Barbarella?
While no official authors of the new Barbarella adaptation, the same Deadline report that looked at Edgar Wright’s possible involvement also claimed that mother-daughter duo Jane Goldman and Honey Ross were approached about writing the screenplay for the film. Goldman is also co-writer of The chainanother upcoming project by Edgar Wright, which may lend more credibility to the report.
Goldman wrote the screenplay for X-Men: First Class and the story of Days of future past. She was also responsible for the screenplays of the first two Kingsman Movies. It seems likely that a successful version of Barbarella could easily be a franchise vehicle, and Goldman has a history in that regard.
What is “Barbarella” about?
Without a script, we cannot know for sure how the story of a new Barbarella film. Considering that the character’s original comic ran from 1964 to 1978, there are many different storylines that could be adapted, assuming that the new film plans to adapt one of them rather than creating something completely original with the character.
What can we say about a Barbarella What’s special about the film is that it will be a science fiction film in which the title character will experience some kind of adventure in space and Barbarella will also have a fair amount of sex. Barbarella was a rather controversial comic at the time because it used the child-friendly medium of comics to depict content that was explicitly intended for adults.
The Jane Fonda film adaptation from 1968
In the 1968 film adaptation, Jane Fonda played the title character, who was tasked by the President of Earth with finding a scientist named Durand Durand. In this peace-loving galaxy, the mastermind was developing a weapon that has the potential to bring the concept of war back to civilization.
From then on, the story develops in a more episodic comic book style, resulting in Barbarella traveling to different places, meeting new people and having space adventures, during which she often enough has sex with someone.
Today the film is considered a cult classic, but although it was groundbreaking and quite sex-positive and even feminist films in its time, that time is long gone. The sexual and gender attitudes seem quite outdated, especially in a story set in the future.
