Federal funds spark clean energy boom in Michigan, creating over 21,000 new jobs

As a result of legislation signed by President Joe Biden, clean energy projects valued at least $25 billion have been announced in Michigan, creating more than 21,000 jobs.

MICHIGAN – A new Climate power The report shows that since the passage of President Joe Biden’s inflation reduction bill, at least 58 new clean energy projects have been announced or advanced in Michigan – more new projects than in almost any other state.

Accordingly the new report, These new clean energy projects in Michigan have spurred at least $25.4 billion in investments and created or supported at least 21,490 new clean energy jobs. According to Climate Power, this is part of a “clean energy boom” currently taking place across the country.

In total, since Biden’s groundbreaking climate and clean energy investments became law in 2022, companies have announced projects that will create more than 312,900 new clean energy jobs for electricians, construction workers, technicians, support staff and more, the report said.

But when it comes to new manufacturing in wind, solar, batteries and electric vehicles, Michigan is leading the way. The report shows that Michigan trails only Georgia, New York and Texas in the total number of clean energy jobs created over the past two years.

The Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure bill represented the largest investments (ever made by any country) in clean energy jobs and manufacturing.

And according to Climate Power, Biden’s clean energy plan is working in Michigan – especially in low-income and rural communities, where at least 21 of the state’s 58 clean energy projects have been announced. These projects will invest more than $11 billion in Michigan’s communities and create (or have already created) nearly 13,000 new jobs.

  • Our next energyThe new $1.6 billion factory in Van Buren Township will create 2,100 jobs. Thousands of batteries are already being produced for the automotive industry;
  • General Motors‘ planned $200 million facility in Auburn Hills with 1,000 jobs, will be housed in the former (and soon to be renovated) Palace of Auburn Hills;
  • Shyft GroupThe planned $16 million expansion in Charlotte with 680 new jobs, most of which will focus on the production of fully electric delivery vans;
  • Fortescue Metals‘ a $35 million manufacturing center and 600-job engineering facility in Detroit, where Officials expect production of car batteries, fast chargers and other EV components to begin in 2025;
  • And four separate production expansion projects out of Magna This will create an additional 1,700 new jobs in Auburn Hills, Detroit, Shelby Township and St. Clair.

What is at stake?

Climate Power’s latest report also contained a warning to voters – particularly about how Republicans in the House Already passed Law to repeal Biden’s clean energy plan and the recent promise to start cutting investments in clean energy on “Day 1”.

“Trump is pledging to destroy more than 300,000 American clean energy jobs,” said Lori Lodes, executive director of Climate Power. “The American people have a right to cleaner and cheaper energy options, and American workers have a right to make those choices here at home. But Trump is willing to create a veritable economic ‘carnage’ so that oil executives can continue to rip us off at the pump without worrying about competition. Trump is siding with the Chinese government to overturn Biden’s clean energy law, and if he gets his way, he will hand over the economic future to them once and for all.”

More than 300 clean energy leaders recently denounced Republican proposals to repeal Biden’s clean energy plan “would be nothing less than a disaster for the economy and national security.”
