American Airlines flight attendants are still slowly they are approaching a strikeThe Association of Professional Flight Attendants, their union, announced Monday that despite a last-minute mediation meeting this weekend, no agreement has yet been reached with the airline.

“After two days of intense discussions, progress has been made but no agreement has been reached,” the union said in a statement to members. “Your negotiating committee is fighting hard to reach an agreement, but it must be an agreement that meets the needs of members.”

Although the flight attendants’ contract expired in 2019They could not strike because their collective bargaining activities are governed by different labour laws than those of other unions. Railway Work Actwhich also ended a railway strike in 2022, brings with it a much greater degree of government intervention.

Federal mediators are participating in the talks between American and the APFA, and a strike may only occur if those mediators declare a stalemate and the Biden administration refuses to force a deal within a 30-day cooling-off period. The APFA has tried to achieve such a stalemate throughout the negotiations but has failed.

“Scheduling of mediation and release into a 30-day cooling-off period will be determined by the National Mediation Board,” the union said Monday. “While we are limited in the details of what we can discuss, we will provide further information on the status of negotiations and next steps to reach an agreement.”

The NMB told Quartz that it does not comment on open cases. American Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
