Mears, 44, replaces Rimer on Bally’s sportscasts and works alongside analyst Jody Shelley. Rimer retired last season after serving in the role for 20 years.

“Steve Mears brings a wealth of experience having broadcast games for regional, national and international audiences for nearly two decades, and we are excited to have him join Jody Shelley in bringing Blue Jackets hockey to our fans,” said Marc Gregory, Blue Jackets vice president of business intelligence and broadcasting, in a statement. “Much like his predecessor Jeff Rimer, Steve brings a deep level of knowledge and enthusiastic dedication to our game, which is evident every time he broadcasts a game.”

Mears, a graduate of Bowling Green State University, has commentated on a variety of hockey events during his 18-year career, including the Stanley Cup Final, NHL All-Star Games, NHL outdoor games and the World Junior Championships. This season, he also served as a live commentator for Stanley Cup playoff games on TNT.

“It is truly an honor for me and I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play games for ‘The 5th Line’ as a television commentator for the Columbus Blue Jackets,” said Mears. “I have seen firsthand for many years, even when I was a student attending games in Bowling Green, how loyal and passionate Blue Jackets fans are and how special game nights can be at Nationwide Arena. With a great core of young, talented players, I can’t wait to start the season and work with Jody Shelley and our production team at Bally Sports Ohio.”
