Eminem recruits Big Sean and BabyTron for Death of Slim Shady track “Tobey”

Eminem stays in the memory with the latest track from his upcoming single “The Michigan” The death of Slim Shady Album.

“Tobey,” featuring fellow Michigan natives Big Sean and BabyTron, follows “Houdini,” which came out last month with a Steve Miller interpolation and a video featuring Pete Davidson and Dr. Dre that summarized several chapters from Em’s decades-long career.

Since April, the Oscar winner has been making allusions to the apparent impending death of his character Slim Shady, reminding longtime fans that the moniker is considered more of a ghost in past lore and thus unkillable. At one point, Em even went so far as to publish a fake obituary for the character who first expressed her chaos in 1997’s “The Slim Shady.” Slim Shady EP.

Em and Sean have worked together before, including on Shady XV Comp cut “Detroit vs. Everybody” a decade ago. Here, Sean calls out to Wes Craven and boasts about a blood test that “didn’t have a whore in it,” setting the tone for Em’s simultaneously boastful and cautionary closing verse in the middle section of the track.

Em begins by repeating the chorus’ hypothesis of being bitten by a goat (“Tobey Maguire was bitten by a spider, but to me it was a goat”) and flashing back to childhood aspirations of being GOATs. From there, he eventually gets into the topic of all-time greats (“Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers/So I know they ’bout to be pissed at me”), specifically mentioning Melle Mel, who made headlines last year with his critical remarks about Em.

The new album, full title The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)is out July 12. A recently released trailer shows the birth of a baby who, in keeping with the title character, has devil horns and a forked tongue. The same baby also made an appearance in “Houdini.”
