Springfield announces plans for Movies in the Park series

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — The city is announcing the return of “Movies in the Park” this summer in an effort to bring safe, family-oriented events to Springfield. The series, which takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in July, runs Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 26, with all screenings beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The full lineup of films and locations was announced Tuesday at Marshall Roy Park, where the big screen was blown up for the public to see. But before we reveal which films will be shown this year, we got some background on the history of the free Movies in the Park series from Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

“It was brought to my attention about 10 years ago and, being old school, I thought, ‘Wait a minute. You mean put up a screen, put up a device.’ They said, ‘No, no. They’re blowing up screens.’ I said, ‘I love it.’ Now we’ve moved it. We had it in three parks and now I’ve moved it across town to nine parks,” Sarno explained.

The three films on the summer playlist are “Elemental,” “Migration,” and “Wonka.”
