Braun Series 9 Trimmer Review: By far my favorite trimmer of 2024

I take the maintenance of my facial hair very seriously. I was blessed by the beard gods above with a full head of chin hair and ended up in a job that requires me to test and review the best grooming tools on the market. Over the years, I’ve tested many of the best beard trimmers; some I’ve despised, some I’ve loved, some I’ve largely forgotten about, and in all of those tests, versatility is the criteria I look for most when evaluating. If a device can answer multiple hair-related questions, it gets a thumbs up from me, so it should come as no surprise why I consider the Braun Series 9 trimmer to be the best men’s grooming tool of 2024.

Any proud beard-wearer has probably pledged allegiance to one of the many male grooming brands available, from Philips and Wahl to BaByliss. I used to be firmly in the Philips camp, but now I’m crossing the line to Braun’s impressive range. I spent two weeks trimming and shaving the Braun Series 9 (part of it abroad) and have since happily switched to the German method of multi-purpose trimming.

The reason I was so impressed with the Braun Pro Beard Trimmer is its willingness to take over virtually every aspect of my grooming routine. It’s ostensibly a beard trimmer with a simple, ergonomic design that features an on/off switch, LED battery indicator, and a haptic dial to select your desired trim length. Sounds like a lot of other trimmers, right? Wrong. The Series 9 comes with 10 additional grooming tools (a wet shaver and additional hair cutting combs are included) and 40 trim length options, allowing for the kind of experimentation I craved from a trimmer.

The dial mentioned above is handy for quickly switching between 0.5mm lengths, giving me complete control over the blend, transition, and shape of my hair. Turning the dial feels mechanical and sturdy, and it has a lock option to prevent accidental adjustments while you’re perfecting your facial fuzz.

The power button also features a lock so you can keep your blusher in a vibrating case when you travel, but it does come with a handy travel case so you can keep it safe while you’re on the go. The travel case includes a variety of shaver heads and accessories including a Contour Pro head (for smoothing edges), a Detail Pro head (for precise cutting), two adjustable hair cutting combs ranging from 0.5 to 20mm, two beard combs for blending hair and beard, a beard stencil for perfecting those sharp cheeks, a handy charging station and a Gillette ProGlide manual razor for a supremely clean finish.

Each tool was useful in certain situations during my testing, and you may not use every accessory all the time, especially if you don’t do all that much home styling, but just the fact that this trimmer has that option sets it apart from many of its competitors in my opinion, especially at this aggressive price point.

The versatility doesn’t end there though. I loved the charging dock, which displays the trimmer very nicely in the bathroom and fully charges the 180-minute battery in around 5 hours. That’s a remarkable trimming time if you need it, but for the most part I trimmed for around 15 minutes every two days and after two weeks of testing the LED battery indicator isn’t even a quarter empty.

Our only criticism is the price. Plenty of accessories and good value for money make it an attractive tool, but paying £120 for a beard trimmer outside of major sales is a lot of money – especially if you only occasionally touch up a shorter beard. It’s a fantastic option for anyone who takes their hair care seriously or shaves frequently, but for casual beard wearers, money might be better spent on cheaper options like the Braun Series 3 trimmer or Philips OneBlade Pro 360.

Verdict on the Braun Series 9 Trimmer

There’s no getting around the fact that £120 is expensive for a beard trimmer, but the value that the Braun Series 9 trimmer offers is undeniable. Many men have given up the bi-monthly trip to the barber after experimenting at home during the Covid years, and instead invested in quality products that they can use themselves, and I’d put this particular trimmer high on the list of the best beard trimmers for home.

No matter the length or density of your beard, the trimmer delivers results, shaves across a wide range of cut lengths and lasts long enough to allow for minute detail and precise trimming. In short, it keeps your beard looking its best.

The Braun Series 9 trimmer is available for £120 from Amazon, Boots, Braun and Argos.
