Four-star guard Dorian Jones will transfer to Ohio State in 2025, not Michigan Basketball

New head coach of the Michigan basketball team Dusty May has brought excitement back to the court in Ann Arbor since his hiring on March 23 and quickly reshuffled much of the Wolverines’ roster in preparation for the 2024-25 season.

However, as the rebuilding process continues in May, Michigan is still looking for its first signing of the 2025 recruiting class after failing to land one of its top targets. On Monday, the shooting guard from Cleveland (Ohio) Richmond Heights Dorian Jonesthe 72nd best young player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, gave his verbal commitment to Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes from his home state over fellow finalists Michigan, Rutgers and Missouri. At 6’4″ and 165 lbs, Jones is considered the No. 12 shooting guard and No. 2 player from Ohio in the class of 2025.

After May was able to sign the former Ohio State guard Roddy Gayle Jr. from the transfer portal this offseason, it would have been another coup if the head coach had stolen one of the Buckeye State’s top 2025 prospects from under OSU’s nose. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and the Wolverines will have to turn their attention to other top targets, including the five-star point guard from IMG Academy out of Bradenton, Florida. Darius Acuff Jr.Five-star small forward Gilbert (Arizona) Perry Koa PeatFive-star point guard from Atlanta (Ga.) Meleek Thomas and four-star shooting guard from Greenfield (Ind.) May was drafted by Michigan after a disastrous end to the Juwan Howard era in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines finished 8-24 in 2023-24, the worst win-loss record in program history. May comes to UM after six seasons as head coach at Florida Atlantic. The 47-year-old led the Owls to the Final Four in 2022-23 and back to the NCAA Tournament last season, where they lost in the first round to Northwestern.

After arriving in Ann Arbor, May began working on Michigan’s roster. The Wolverines added guards Durral Brooks, Lorenzo Cason And Justin Pippen from the 2024 recruiting class as he looks around the portal to acquire five more players in addition to Gayle – Guards Tre Donaldson (Auburn) and Ruby Jones (North Texas), Forward Sam Walters (Alabama) and centers Danny Wolf (Yale) and Vladislav Goldin (Florida Atlantic). Michigan also returns two veterans in the guard Nimari Burnett and further Will Tschetter from last year’s squad.
