Jamie Lee Curtis celebrates 40 years since his first date with Christopher Guest

Jamie Lee Curtis is celebrating a major milestone in her relationship with Christopher Guest.

On Tuesday, July 2, the 65-year-old Oscar winner posted a vintage photo of herself and her now-husband from the 1980s, shortly after they began their relationship, to celebrate four decades together.

“40 years ago today I went on my first date with Christopher,” Curtis wrote in the caption. “Five months later we got married and started building our lives.”

“Chance encounter. Life depends on it. Children grow up. LOVE IS LOVE!” she concluded.

Among the celebrities who sent their congratulations in the comments were Guest’s Princess Bride co-star Cary Elwes, who wrote: “So awesome! Happy anniversary guys 🎉👏🏻🙏.”

Rita Wilson also joined in: “Happy 40th, Jamie and Chris!!!!! Sending you both lots of love!!đź’•”

The romance between Curtis and Guest began when the my girl The actress first discovered him in a magazine and talked about how their relationship began.

In a personal essay she wrote for PEOPLE in 2022, Curtis revealed that there was a connection between her marriage and her iconic role as Final Girl, Laurie Strode, in the Halloween Movies.

“I was with the author of the original Halloween when I first saw my husband of 37 years,” she said. “Debra Hill and I were sitting on my couch in West Hollywood in 1984.”

“I have a copy of Rolling Stonesaw Christopher Guest in a Lumbar puncture story and said, ‘I’m going to marry this guy.’ (I did six months later),” Curtis added.

Curtis elaborated on the story in another essay she wrote for Oprah.com in 2004, explaining that she called Guest’s agent to give him her number in case he wanted to call, but he never did.

“I continued living my life,” Crazy Friday said the actress.

Weeks later, Curtis saw Guest, 76, across the street from a restaurant called Hugo’s in West Hollywood. They waved to each other, and he called her the next day.

“On July 2, Chris and I had our first date at Chianti Ristorante on Melrose Street,” she said. “And on August 8, when he left to spend a year Saturday Night Live in New York City we would fall in love.”

The couple married on December 18, 1984 and had two daughters: Annie, now 37, and Ruby, now 28.

Although she and Guest do not often appear together at events, Guest supported his wife at the 2023 Oscars when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Everything everywhere at once — she has posted many tributes to her husband over the years, including one on their wedding anniversary in December 2020.

“One of my longest relationships where I sought comfort, contact and connection is with Chris. Today is the 36th anniversary of our wedding,” Curtis wrote on Instagram alongside a black-and-white version of the same old photo she posted on Tuesday.

“My hand in his. Then and now. Connected by our children, our family and our friends, they became the links in our human chain of emotions that has accompanied each of us through triumphs and tragedies,” she concluded.

The latter anniversary post was originally shared on the Instagram page of My Hand in Yours, Curtis’ website, which benefits Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and features artists and jewelry designers.
