I just realized who Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents are, and they are quite famous

You may know Benedict Cumberbatch from his roles in films such as Sherlock and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

But if you’re like me, you probably didn’t know that his mother and father, Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton Congdon Cumberbatch (aka Timothy Carlton), are quite successful actors – and even played Sherlock’s parents in the BBC TV series.

His father was born in Reading and appeared in countless television shows, from Keeping Up Appearances to Next of Kin, where he played Hugh. His film career began in the early 1960s.

In the meantime, Wanda Vantham (the actor’s mother) has appeared in numerous series, from “UFO” to “Doctor Who”.

It turned out that Benedict’s parents (initially) did not want him to become an actor

As if discovering who the Doctor Strange actor’s parents are wasn’t shocking enough, it turns out that they were surprisingly (or perhaps not) anything but thrilled about their son’s career choice.

Speaking to Claire Foy for an episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors in 2018, Benedict said: “Dad worked nonstop, partly to pay for my education, and basically tried to convince me that it was madness to be constantly moving around, not being able to plan your family vacations and not knowing where the next income was going to come from.”

“All the uncertainty that was palpable in their lives, our lives. And yet they managed to scrape together enough money for an incredibly expensive education that was only intended to teach me sense and make me a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher and something that would be of use to society,” he added.

But he mentioned that after seeing his son in the role of Salieri in Amadeus while he was studying, Benedict’s father said to him: “You are better at this than I ever was or ever will be. I can’t wait to watch you and support you in what I believe will be a fantastic career.”

Ohhh…
