Ferrari’s plan to replace hybrid batteries to protect performance and value

Ferrari is introducing a battery replacement program for its electric sports cars to ensure their performance and residual value in the long term.

The automaker has recognized that lithium-ion batteries age over time and their performance and range between charges decrease. That’s why it is now offering owners of its hybrid vehicles two new extended warranty programs that allow batteries to be replaced at set intervals.

The test program is open to owners of the plug-in hybrid models SF90 Stradale, SF90 Spider, SF90 XX Stradale, SF90 XX Spider, 296 GTB and 296 GTS.

Of course, the question arises whether Ferrari will later extend this program to its battery-electric vehicle, which will be released next year.

The first program, called the Warranty Extension Hybrid Program, extends the hybrid car’s existing five-year warranty to up to eight years. From this point on, Ferrari will replace the high-voltage battery (HVB) at no additional cost.

In addition, there is the Power Hybrid program, which offers owners an extended factory warranty on all major powertrain components, including hybrid system components, from year 8 to year 16, with battery replacement in year 16.

In a company press release, Ferrari explains: “Both programs guarantee customers that in the event of future developments in battery technology, the replacement HVB will be a new, state-of-the-art component that ensures the same performance as the original.”

The plans will cost around 7,000 euros ($7,530) per year, a source told Reuters, adding that they will also apply to Ferrari’s BEV model, raising questions about whether the battery can be easily replaced without major chassis work.
