As a new trailer for Cobra KaiThe sixth and final season of “The Last Man” on Netflix has been canceled. Co-creators Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz have explained their reasons for ending the series with the upcoming three-part season. As a spin-off of The Karate Kid, Cobra KaiIts beginnings as a YouTube Original in 2018 proved to be just the beginning of a series that revived nostalgic memories of the ’80s film and ultimately revived the entire franchise.

“Season 5 was about bringing the kids together so they could compete as a giant team in this Sekai Tekai against the next level fighters that they have to face. At the end of Season 5, there were some hanging Chads left, namely Kreese, so we’ll see what happens with that. But yeah, we knew in Season 5 that we were in the final stages of that, and it wasn’t until after we shot Season 5 that we figured out exactly, ‘Okay, this is going to be the end after this.'”

The creators always had the final season of Cobra Kai in mind

Just as Erik Kripke recently spoke about why he thinks it is right, The young will end after next season as he completes his five-season plan, Cobra KaiThe creative team had their “finish line” in sight from day one. Hurwitz explained:

“It was hugely important to us from the beginning (to have a finish line). It’s weird, we went into this show partly naively, partly with wishful thinking and faith in the story we’re telling: ‘Okay, where we end the show, a lot of what happens in the last episode has elements of what we talked about before we started shooting Season 1.’ So we knew what we wanted Johnny and Daniel’s relationship to be, and we knew what was going to happen in that last episode. A lot of things evolved over time, but there was always kind of that North Star, and we were determined to do as many seasons as we could.”

Jon Hurwitz, co-creator and co-showrunner of Cobra Kai Season 6, addresses fan dissatisfaction with the three-part release schedule.

One circumstance that nearly ended the series prematurely was that its spot on YouTube suddenly disappeared, leaving the series with neither a home nor a future. Thankfully, Netflix came along and saved the situation, but as Hurwitz further recalled, the point of the show’s production was to bring about additional seasons to bring it to a proper conclusion.

“Since we were on YouTube, we were really confident that we could hit the ground running with the first season and do more. The big surprise for us was that YouTube no longer existed. (laughs) So at that point we thought, ‘Okay, we have to do everything we can.’ For example, when we were shooting the third season, I remember asking ourselves, ‘How can we make this season have so much spectacularity and so many elements that make you want more?’ In a scenario – and this is what happened – where YouTube goes away so they can offer it and then it has enough power to make it attractive elsewhere. Hopefully Netflix, and here we are.”

Cobra KaiThe final season of is divided into three parts, with the first five episodes premiering on July 18, the next five on November 28, and the final season scheduled for 2025.
