See road closures and parking plan for the University of Michigan move-in

ANN ARBOR, MI – Ann Arbor will experience traffic and parking changes for a few days during the University of Michigan’s move-in week in late August.

The Ann Arbor City Council unanimously approved the temporary traffic and parking plan during its July 1 meeting, which will change the streets and sidewalks around campus from 7 a.m. on August 21 to 11 p.m. on August 25.

A map of the traffic plan can be found here. These changes will come into effect in the week of the move:

  • Thompson Street southbound is a one-way street from East Jefferson Street to Packard Street.
  • East Madison Street is a one-way street running east from Thompson Street to South State Street.
  • Observatory Street southbound is a one-way street from East Ann Street to Geddes Avenue.
  • East Washington Street westbound is one-way from Fletcher Street to Thayer Street.
  • Washington Heights is closed from Observatory Street to East Medical Drive.
  • East Ann Street eastbound is a one-way street from Zina Pitcher Place to Observatory Street.

Unless otherwise noted, parking meters will be bagged in all of the Ann Arbor neighborhoods listed above. These neighborhoods have also experienced parking problems:

  • On Maynard Street from East Jefferson to East William Street, parking meters will be bagged.
  • Parking meters are being removed from East University Avenue between Hill Street and Willard Street
  • Parking meters are being bagged on Church Street between Hill Street and Willard Street
  • In North University Court, the parking meters will be equipped with bags.
  • On Oxford Road, parking spaces will be reserved from Hill Street to Geddes Avenue for the move-in.

The city will restrict the issuance of peddler’s licenses and sidewalk permits within one block of residential units on the affected streets, the resolution states.

The university administration will maintain the marked traffic routes and provide personnel to man the barriers to ensure the safety of families moving into the accommodations, the resolution states.
