4 steps the Spurs need to take after signing Chris Paul

The San Antonio Spurs convinced Chris Paul to join Victor Wembanyama. It’s no small feat to trade an all-time great to play for your franchise. CP3 is past his prime, but the deal speaks to Wemby’s size and potential.

Paul undoubtedly makes the Spurs better. They may not be ready to make the playoffs or compete with the best teams in the Western Conference, but the future Hall of Famer will teach their young talent a lot about how to succeed in the NBA. That alone makes this signing a win, even if CP3’s performance on the court leaves a lot to be desired.

The Spurs aren’t done with their moves yet. They want to slowly build around Wembanyama to have multiple building blocks in place to stay in title contention for years to come. Still, San Antonio needs to work its way to that point, and there’s no better time than now to prepare for success.

Chris Paul is the only player on the Spurs’ roster older than 27 who is expected to play some minutes. Aside from Zach Collins, the rest of the group is under 25 and has no NBA experience. CP3’s importance is unquestionable, but San Antonio can’t have just one veteran on its 15-man roster.

There were rumors of interest in Nicolas Batum, but he returned to the Clippers as a free agent. He would have been a perfect fit. Batum’s versatile skills and leadership qualities are exactly what the Spurs should be looking for.

Paul will take on a key mentoring role in San Antonio during the 2024-25 season, but can they find another veteran to make his job easier? There are several options available, and the Spurs should definitely want to help Victor Wembanyama and their young talent flourish. What better way to do that than to learn from someone who has already done it?

You can’t just sign a veteran and then call it a day during the offseason. San Antonio’s front office should be ringing the phones to sign and trying to improve the roster.
