Charithra Chandran joins the cast of new CBeebies show Nikhil & Jay

“Bridgerton” star Charithra Chandran lends her voice to the upcoming BBC animated sitcom “Nikhil & Jay.”

The series is based on the books by Chitra Soundar and follows the adventures of two young Indian-British brothers and their charming family.

“With Indian and English grandparents, their lives are a rich mix of customs, traditions, festivals, food and music,” the logline reads. “‘Nikhil & Jay’ celebrates the similarities and differences with fun and relatable stories that authentically portray British-Asian dual heritage children and are full of warmth, heart and humor.”

The adaptation is set to launch on BBC children’s service CBeebies later this year.

Chandran, who is of British Tamil descent, will play the boys’ mother, Amma. In addition to playing debutante Edwina Sharma in “Bridgerton,” she has also appeared in “Alex Rider” and “How to Date Billy Walsh” and will appear in the series “Dune Prophecy.”

“It’s really wonderful to see a programme like this on the BBC and to see my culture represented so concretely. I never experienced anything like this growing up,” said Chandran.

Brothers Nikhil and Jay are played by 7-year-olds Shiv Senthilkumar and Sai Ganesh Nadesan, while Ben Harris plays the boys’ father, Appa. Rounding out the cast are Janine Duvitski as Nana, Mark Benton as Grandpa Jim, Janaki Sabesh as Grandma Ammamma, Ravi Swami as Grandpa Thatha, Tez Ilyas as neighbor Mr. Awan, and Harriet Carmichael plays the family cat Max. Michelle Jones of Brilliant Casting cast the series.

King Banana TV (“Yakka Dee!”) and Paper Owl Films (“Pablo”) are producing, while CAKE (“Angry Birds Summer Madness”) is producing and distributing the series. Northern Ireland Screen provided financing.
