Freddy Peralta shines, Brewers win series against Angels

Result

Freddy Peralta has had a rough time of it so far this season. He’s had some rough starts, but on Wednesday night he looked like the ace we know he is. He pitched six scoreless innings and the Brewers provided enough offense to win the playoff against the Angels.

Before Peralta even threw a pitch, the Brewers had already given him a 1-0 lead thanks to a small ball. Joey Ortiz opened the game with a walk, then William Contreras hit a single. Christian Yelich grounded out to move both forward, and Willy Adames walked to load the bases. Rhys Hoskins got one on a sacrifice fly. Sal Frelick had a chance to add another, but Kevin Pillar got a little revenge on Frelick by making a superb sliding catch in foul territory for the third out of the inning.

From then on, both starting pitchers found their form. Tyler Anderson played seven innings for the Angels and allowed only one run. He also allowed four hits and three walks and had five strikeouts. The Brewers only got one more runner to second base against Anderson after the first inning.

Peralta was just as good, though. He allowed a total of three baserunners in the first five innings. However, he ran into trouble in the sixth inning. Luis Rengifo hit a single with one out and then got to second base on a walk. Pillar managed a walk for a runner on second, and an error by Peralta on a pickoff attempt put the runners ahead. Logan O’Hoppe hit a sharp ground ball with two outs, but it was hit right to Brice Turang, who easily threw it to first base for the last out, allowing Peralta to end the inning. Overall, Peralta allowed just three hits and two walks, and struck out eight strikeouts.

The Brewers got some protection in the eighth inning with two outs. Yelich walked and stole second base, then Adames brought him in with a single to left. They had a chance for more after Hoskins hit a single, but Frelick retired with a line out to end the inning.

In the bullpen, Bryan Hudson continued his dominance with two more scoreless innings. Trevor Megill followed with a clean ninth inning to secure the win.

Overall, the Brewers offense managed six hits and five walks. Wily Adames was the best of the day, hitting 1-for-2 and walking two runs. He also scored one of the Brewers’ two runs.

The Brewers now have a short trip to San Diego and will open a four-game series against the Padres tomorrow night. Bryse Wilson will face Adam Mazur in the first game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40 p.m.
