Nogales seniors find community through singing

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN) – On Mondays and Fridays, the Nogales Senior Center fills with music.

A group of about a dozen local seniors meet to form a choir under the direction of a teacher. Some are soloists, others sing in the choir.

“It’s a very happy group, we’re full of life,” said David Valenzuela. “The teacher tells us to sing from the heart, with feeling for all the seniors.”

His wife Cecilia says it has become the perfect retirement activity.

“I always liked music, but I never had the time,” she said. “My husband and I joined and we are very happy.”

At the senior center, the choir is just one of many activities offered. Bingo and exercise classes are also very popular.

All of these services are provided free of charge thanks to government subsidies.

One of the center’s directors says the choir and other programs helped build community.

“One of the biggest problems in the United States is loneliness. People don’t know who to be with or what to do when they’re alone. That’s why we create this space for them,” said Dr. Arnoldo Montiel.

The most important thing is to create a place where you can be happy together.

“This is their second home. They come here to laugh, eat and talk. It’s a wonderful place,” Montiel said. “A happy place.”
