The legendary candy store in York Beach has been named Maine’s most famous restaurant

The legendary candy store in York Beach has been named Maine’s most famous restaurant

There is no doubt, Maine is a culinary king.

No matter where you are in the state, you’re guaranteed to have an incredible dining experience. From foodie towns like Portland and Biddeford to tourist destinations like Bar Harbor and Southern York County, Maine is a hit with every cuisine.

The state is also blessed with an abundance of iconic eateries. From award-winning restaurants to celebrity chefs, nationally known establishments to century-old establishments, there’s no denying that Maine is spoiled.

With so many spots, it’s basically like Sophie’s decision I’m trying to find Maine’s most famous place. Could it be a lobster shack? Maybe it’s a typical Portland place. Maybe it’s one of those old-fashioned places that’s easy to find.

What if I told you that Maine’s most famous restaurant isn’t a typical restaurant at all? At least, that’s what one popular website says, which claims that Maine’s most famous restaurant is actually, first and foremost, a candy store.

The good folks at Wealth of Geeks have published an article about the most famous restaurants in each state. The choice of Maine may surprise many, but not those who know the customs and history of a delicious candy shop called The Goldenrod.

Founded in 1896 by Edward and Mattie Talpey, The Goldenrod is a true Southern Maine classic. The candy shop is still located on the same spot where it was founded, right in the heart of York Beach.

Although the Goldenrod has a small menu, the shop is best known for its famous Saltwater Toffee and other sweets, which the Goldenrod has been producing for over a century.

Saltwater taffy is a coastal delicacy. No American beach town is complete without a delicious saltwater taffy joint, and The Goldenrod is the mecca for that. Made from the same recipe since 1896, The Goldenrod’s taffy is a must-try for locals and tourists alike. You can even read about the taffy-making process on the store’s website.

And like any good candy store, the window display was its best advertisement. I’ll let Wealth of Geeks explain that one.

…this famous restaurant began life as a candy shop, where founders Edward and Mattie Talpey hand-pulled Goldenrod’s saltwater taffy in the store’s window, leading to its fame and enduring popularity. Its offerings have expanded to include more than just candy: visitors have been enjoying its fine food and delicious sweets for over 100 years.

So, who’s up for a little trip to York Beach to pick up some taffy? Well, now would be the perfect time since we’re already in the middle of summer. There’s nothing better than a beach day in Maine with a whole lot of delicious saltwater taffy.

Congratulations to The Goldenrod for the great publicity. Here’s to more iconic Maine small businesses getting the recognition they deserve.
