Third ‘drug death’ in Moga within two weeks – his parents’ only child | Chandigarh News

In another suspected drug overdose death, a youth in his early twenties was found dead near Kandial village in Dharamkot sub-district in Punjab’s Moga district on Wednesday, police said.

Police identified the deceased as Harman Singh, the only child of his parents from the nearby village of Lohara.

According to eyewitnesses, several used syringes were found near the body.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has deployed at least 10,000 policemen as part of a massive crackdown on the drug mafia-police nexus.

This is the third such death in the last two weeks in Moga district alone. Two men had previously died in Bhaloor village, allegedly due to drugs. The ruling AAP is under fire from various political parties for allegedly failing to eradicate drugs in Punjab even after two and a half years of its rule.
Harman’s parents said their son left home on Sunday and has been missing since then.

Festive offer

They added that their son had been using drugs for about two years.

Karamjit Singh Gill, sarpanch of Lohara village, said, “The chitta (heroin) available in our area is laced with chemicals that kill youngsters. A small overdose can be fatal. What can parents do if their children do not listen to them?”

Speaking to The Indian Express, Navdeep Singh, SHO Inspector of Dharamkot police station, said the family of the deceased youth had not lodged any complaint, so the investigation was initiated under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Singh said, “According to his father, Harman was suffering from seizures for nearly three years. He was addicted to drugs and was undergoing detoxification. He became addicted when he started taking ‘goliyaan’ (narcotics) 2-3 years ago. On Sunday, he had a fight with his parents because they did not want to buy him a new motorcycle. He left the house and did not return. On Wednesday, his body was found near Kandial village. However, his parents refused to get an autopsy done.”

Meanwhile, anger against the AAP government erupted in Lohara village on Wednesday. Villagers alleged that many youth in their village had died due to drugs but their families had cremated them without informing the police because of social stigma. They said local AAP MP Devinderjeet Singh Laddi Dhos had promised to ban drugs from their village but nothing had happened.

When contacted, MLA Dhos said, “I got the police to investigate and found that the victim was suffering from seizures. He had a fight with his father over buying a new bike and was not at home since Sunday. The police did not find any drugs at the spot. As far as AAP’s promise to eradicate drugs is concerned, I have got announcements made in every village in my constituency revealing the names of drug peddlers. The identity of informants is kept secret. Out of 160 villages, I have received lists of only 12-13 villages and within 24 hours, action has been taken. If no one comes forward, how can we take action? We are determined to put an end to drugs.”
