Michigan CarShare, the short-term rental option for electric cars, is coming to Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit city leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning to celebrate the launch of Michigan CarShare in the Motor City.

The program offers short-term electric car rentals in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, and now also in Detroit.

“I love it,” said Sheila Tilles, who rented a Bolt through the program. “I can take my mom to her doctor’s appointments or my doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping.”

The locations in Detroit are River Crest Apartments, Eastside Community Network and Dreamtroit.

There, users will find an electric vehicle that they can rent, unlock and use with the MDO CarShare app.

“We know that lack of transportation leads to health problems and exacerbates the poverty problem of underemployed or unemployed residents,” said Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield at the opening ceremony.

Michigan CarShare is part of Mobility Development Operations (MDO), which successfully rents electric cars in 14 other states.

Sheffield said: “Access to this electric vehicle car sharing scheme could be life-changing for some of our most vulnerable citizens and needy families.”

The hourly rate for one of the electric vehicles is $5, the daily rate is $50.

You can sign up for a rental period via the MDO CarShare app.
