During a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed the vision Taylor Sheridan had for the future and the inevitable ending of the series.
The actor revealed that no one from the cast or crew other than Sheridan knows how the series ends. This is quite unconventional, as actors often know what fate their characters will face at some point in the story. However, the director has a different idea of how the actors will experience their ending.
He wants us to experience it the way the audience experiences it, and I think he also writes it the way it happens,
I know he knows how this ends because he told me. But I have no idea what it is.
Instead of telling them, he wants the actors to experience the story. As the story progresses and arcs are played out, they can experience the story along with the audience and be surprised by what he has planned. Sheridan is so committed to this vision that at the beginning of the season, he didn’t even write the endings down.
Luke Grimes is not bothered by the mystery
Many actors might be bothered by this kind of approach to a project. Kevin Costner famously had a problem with being left in the dark, and this led to a drastic falling out between the two. However, it seems that Luke Grimes has a different perspective on the whole thing, as he revealed during the interview.
I actually like it that way. It’s a good way to approach everything. It feels like living a second life. That’s life.
Grimes revealed that he enjoys not knowing how Yellowstone ends, and he even enjoys not knowing where Kayce Dutton’s story will take him. Experiencing his character’s life first hand is almost a thrilling journey for the actor. He even went so far as to compare it to living two lives.
