The North Carolina Volleyball Association is bringing elite sports to Chapel Hill with a name familiar to NFL fans.
Freshman Jackie Taylor, daughter of the late NFL Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor, is on the Tar Heels roster and wears her father’s number 21.
Jackie was just 18 months old when her father was shot and killed by intruders in his home near Miami in 2007 – a tragedy that shocked NFL players and sports fans.
“He was one of those players of a generation, one of those guys you only see once in a lifetime,” said former Carolina and Washington coach Ron Rivera. “He meant a lot to this organization and unfortunately he was taken from us way too soon.”
Carolina Volleyball announced the jersey number last week on X (formerly Twitter) in a post that was viewed more than 2.4 million times.
Jackie and Sean Taylor both led Miami’s Gulliver Prep to the Florida state championships in their respective sports.
Sean went on to play college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he won the 2001 BCS National Championship and the Jack Tatum Trophy as the best defensive back in college football. He was selected No. 5 overall in the 2004 NFL Draft and drafted by Washington, where he played for four seasons.
Jackie, a 6’1″ middle blocker, joins the Heels as the second-best high school volleyball player in Florida, according to PrepDig. As a senior last season, she averaged 4.9 kills per set (418 total), a .400 hitting percentage, 4.1 digs per set and 108 total blocks – the most on the team.
“Your spirit and legacy live on in my heart, guiding and inspiring me every day,” Jackie wrote in an Instagram post honoring her father in April. “To you, Dad, and the unforgettable impression you made on me! I will always look up to you.”
