The world-famous Amerigo Vespucci docks in San Pedro – NBC Los Angeles

A ship that has been described as “the most beautiful in the world” will dock at the Port of Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian naval training ship built in 1930, will stop in Southern California as part of her 15-stop world tour. The ship has been in service since 1931, with a brief interruption during World War II, and has been in service ever since.

The ship, named after the Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Florence, will be open to the public for tours from Wednesday through July 8. In addition to tours of the ship, there will be food and live entertainment to celebrate “all things Italian.”

Various Italian government officials, including Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, will attend the opening ceremony on Wednesday.

In addition to the ship, visitors can experience the Villagio Italia, a “multi-year traveling world exhibition” of Italian culture and traditions.

The Villagio will screen five well-known Italian films, host over six exhibitions, display Olympic torches from past Olympic Games held in Italy, and showcase the bronze sculpture “La David”, a replica of Michelangelo’s masterpiece by Italian sculptor Jago. A makeshift restaurant and show cooking by Eataly will also be offered.
