M. Night Shyamalan says he touted the thriller “Trap” as “Silence of the Lambs” at a Taylor Swift concert

M. Night Shyamalan’s next film is Catcha psychological thriller starring Josh Hartnett, which will be released in theaters on August 2nd.

The film’s writer, director and producer recently spoke about how he pitched the idea and told Rich“What if The Silence of the Lambs took place at a Taylor Swift concert?”

Catch is set at a concert, an event organized by police to catch a serial killer nicknamed “The Butcher.” Shyamalan has said his film was partly inspired by the real-life Operation Flagship, a 1985 undercover operation in which U.S. Marshals offered NFL tickets to lure and capture fugitives.

“It was hilarious,” Shyamalan said. “The cops were literally cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing when they came in. And they all got caught. It was so wacky and funny.”

Shyamalan said of the film, “I directed an entire concert! And that wasn’t just a background thing. It’s just as important. There’s no fake concert. I love the idea of cinema as a window within windows. One of the reasons to see the film in the cinema is that there’s literally a real concert that you can’t see anywhere else except in this film.”

Shyamalan’s real-life daughter Saleka Shyamalan plays Lady Raven, the pop star who performs at the concert. Catch Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, Alison Pill, Marnie McPhail and Vanessa Smythe also star.

The filmmaker also stressed the importance of creating original films, adding: “I want the industry to move more towards original storytelling. I think audiences would really like that. I know intellectual property is safe. But it’s really important that we go to the cinema and see something we’ve never seen before. I’ll keep fighting for that.”
