The final annual celebration of the International African Arts Festival will take place July 4-7 at Commodore Barry Park.
The cultural event at City Park marks the 53rd year that vendors, artisans and artists have gathered at this landmark site at Navy St. and Flushing Ave. for an alternative celebration of American independence. It will be the last time crowds will gather there to celebrate all things diaspora.
According to sources, a new location will replace the former African Street Festival facility, often described as an “ideal setting”, which was created from fundraising by the Uhuru Sasa Shule that made the event possible over the bank holiday weekend.
Based on a concept by the late educator and social activist Jitu Weusi and others, African fashion and ensembles encouraged wearers to show pride in their heritage and culture.
After moving to the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn four years later, it seemed as if vendors and visitors had taken a whole new approach to dressing, shopping, selling, performing and celebrating the predominantly African exhibition.
Ultimately, the free alternative presentation attracted tourists and county residents who boasted about the unique aspect of the Pride Parade. Caribbean food proved enticing, fashion seductive, performances outstanding, and reuniting with friends the main attraction.
In 2001, a larger room was required due to the enormous number of visitors.
Wuyl Jacobs, host of “Afro Beat” on WBAI-FM, said the festival will continue to expand and continue, but another venue will have to be found again.
Jacobs did not elaborate on the reasons behind the decision to move, but explained that he would broadcast his one-hour, global news program on all three days.
The IAAF is the largest and longest running festival in the United States dedicated to Pan-African culture.
The sound of African drums is often the highlight of the celebrations, but a walk around the grounds has always been a feast for the eyes for the many people who were granted access to the grounds in return for a donation.
By the way, politicians have always made a stop at the primaries to meet and greet their constituents. This year, due to the early election, there may not be any candidates from the constituencies in attendance.
It should be mentioned that Job and Muslimah Mashariki will assume the chief marshal positions at the parade on Saturday.

Thank you to the editors and staff of Caribbean Life for donating my fee for my mother, Vena W. Baker, who died on May 24 and celebrated her farewell last Tuesday. I am deeply grateful for your generosity and will be forever grateful for the kindness shown.
See you inside!
