Fantasy Golf Value Picks: The Best DraftKings PGA TOUR DFS Bargains for the John Deere Classic

Fantasy Golf Value Picks: The Best DraftKings PGA TOUR DFS Bargains for the John Deere Classic

Next on the PGA TOUR schedule is the John Deere Classic. TPC Deere Run (par 71, 7,289 yards, bentgrass greens) in Silvis, Illinois, has been home to the John Deere Classic since the event’s inception in 2000. Sepp Straka won this event last season with a score of -21, two strokes ahead of the field. The John Deere Classic features 156 players this week, and there will be a normal top-65 standings after the first two rounds, and ties will be broken.

After an easy course at Detroit Golf Club last week, TPC Deere Run is another course that is always a low-scoring option. Four of the last five winners of this par 71 course have shot -21 or better. There’s no need to hit long shots on this second-shot-only course, and TPC Deere Run’s biggest advantage is the 76 bunkers on the property – plus water comes into play on three holes. Avoiding these issues and putting in strong performances with both the irons and flats is the recipe for success at TPC Deere Run. Of the last five winners at this track, three have finished the event in the top 10 in SG: Approach and three have finished in the top 5 in SGP.

Finally, targeting players who are good on 400-450 yard par 4s is a smart strategy this week, as this area of holes is the most important at TPC Deere Run. Five of the 11 par 4s on this par 71 are in this area, and each of the last five winners of the John Deere Classic has been in the top five in efficiency on 400-450 yard par 4s during their victories.

Below, I’ll highlight four of my favorite DraftKings bargains for the John Deere Classic, all of which are under $7,500.

Nate Lashley ($7,400) – Lashley is at his best at birdie fests and is a steal at this price point. The veteran tied for 21st at last year’s John Deere Classic and tied for 26th at the event in 2019. Additionally, Lashley tied for 25th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, making his fifth cut and third top-25 finish in his last eight starts.

The veteran has gained strokes with his irons and putter in his two consecutive starts and is ready for another quality finish at the TPC Deere Run this weekend.

Jonathan Vegas ($7,200) – Vegas finished T25 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, gaining 4.5 strokes in the process, which is his season-best. This is his third finish of T27 or better in his last four solo starts. The Venezuelan pro has made it to the weekend in six of his last nine solo starts and is tied for seventh in SGT2G and 12th in GTA.th in SG: Approach in his last 50 rounds. The veteran now brings that compelling form to TPC Deere Run, where he has made four straight cuts, including a T11 in 2021 and a T3 in 2014.

Vegas has gained strokes with his flat club in each of his last four visits to TPC Deere Run. If his putter can be brought back to life on these greens, which he knows very well, the 39-year-old has a real chance to compete in this weak field.

David Skinns ($6,900) – Skinns missed the cut in his debut at the John Deere Classic two years ago, but the veteran is in much better form this time around. Skinns turned heads with his ball striking at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, leading the field with 7.0 strokes gained on the approach shot – which also set a new career high for the English pro – to finish tied for 17th. Before that, Skinns finished tied for 21st at the RBC Canadian Open, winning in every major category except on the greens. Skinns has now made seven of his last 10 cuts and is tied for 23rd.rd in SG: Approach and 47th in BOB% for the season. In addition, the veteran is at his best position at 133rd place in the world golf rankings.

With this undeniable form, Skinns should be successful at the vulnerable TPC Deere Run and will likely enter with little ownership as he is a lesser-known name on the PGA TOUR. In each of his last two starts, Skinns was owned at less than 1% in the DraftKings Drive The Green contest.

Troy Merritt ($6,800) – Merritt finished tied for 17th at last year’s John Deere Classic and has plenty of merit at that low salary. The veteran made 6 of 10 cuts at TPC Deere Run and is in rock-solid form heading to Silvis this week. While he gained 3.8 strokes on the approach shot and 2.5 strokes on the green, Merritt finished tied for 17th at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The 38-year-old has now made it to the weekend in five of his last six solo starts, and Merritt’s success has been largely down to his fantastic ball-striking. If we compare the last 24 rounds of this field, he is ranked ninth in SG: Approach. Merritt is clearly undervalued for his potential and can be used in all formats.
