“24 years later, these words hit differently”

Halsey previews her new single “Lucky,” which samples Britney Spears’ song from her second album. Oops! I did it again.

“When I was 5, it always felt like Britney was singing directly to me,” Halsey shared in an Instagram post. “24 years later, these words hit me differently. I love you forever.”

Halsey’s song says, “But I’m so lucky, I’m a star, but I cry, cry, cry in my lonely heart and think: If I’m missing nothing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?”

Spears’ “Lucky” was released on July 25, 2000 as the second single from her second studio album. The song’s authors are Max Martin, Rami Yacoub and Alexander Kronlund. “Lucky” is about a famous actress of the same name who seems to have everything but feels unhappy and lonely.

“She’s so lucky, she’s a star / but she cries, cries, cries in her lonely heart and thinks / if there’s nothing missing in my life / then why do these tears come at night?” sings Spears in “Lucky.”

Halsey’s “Lucky” is part of their fifth album. In June, they released their first single, “The End.” The single received a lot of attention because Halsey revealed her private health struggle in the song.

“In 2022, I was first diagnosed with Lupus SLE and then a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disease. Both are currently being treated or in remission; and both are likely to be with me for the rest of my life,” Halsey shared in an Instagram post on June 5. “After a rocky start, I’ve slowly gotten everything under control with the help of amazing doctors.”

Halsey continued, “After two years, I’m feeling better and more grateful than ever to have music to rely on. I can’t wait to get back where I belong: With all of you singing and screaming your heart out.”
