Corinthian Yacht Club hosts Youth Match Racing Championship

The US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup was an exciting event right up to the last second of the final race. The Corinthian Yacht Club hosted a fantastic event for all regatta participants.

The final round ended with a 3-1 victory for Morgan Pinckney, Peter Barnard, Samantha Hemans and Kelly Holthus of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

Pinckney defeated Hamilton Barclay, Ava Anderson, William Baker and Hayden McCready of Lakewood Yacht Club in the final.

The event began with two days of advanced match racing instruction from Janelle Zarkowsky Martin and Dave Perry. Thanks to the tactical approach of the race committee, a full round robin tournament was completed, followed by the final rounds of racing.

“This year’s Rose Cup had the most cohesive groups of kids, race fans, referees and event staff,” said Ryan Davidson, event representative for the US Sailing Championship Committee.

The Nick Scandone Sportsmanship Award was presented to Peter Busch, Kate Joslin, Peter Joslin and Harrison Strom of the San Diego Yacht Club. The trophy is named after the late U.S. Paralympic gold medalist Nick Scandone, who not only won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but defeated both able-bodied and physically challenged competitors in the final year of his life while battling ALS.

Nick’s perseverance despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles is an inspiration to the winners of the Scandone Sportsmanship Trophy and to all sailors.
