In an unpublished interview on First For Women, Cuoco talked about how her character became interested in Leonard Hofstadter, in which Sara Gilbert guest-starred in one of the series’ episodes.

She explained that it was a “Girls’ business” and that she became jealous because he was getting attention. She said:

That was it. I’ve been asked about it so many times. People are like, “Why would she…?” And I always think, “Why would I be jealous if I’m not interested in this guy?” But I’ve been in these situations where you’re not interested in this particular person, but you like that they’re interested in you. That’s a girl thing and you think, “Oh, wow, he’s actually busy.”

She further explained that it was a “Eye-opening experience” for her character, and since someone else wanted him, she became “a little jealous, which made her go out with him.

It was an eye-opening experience for Penny because she doesn’t see him that way. But the fact that he is desired by a certain person makes him appear in a whole new light to her. So, yes, she was a little jealous.

Although she stated that she had no interest in him at first, she believes that it was her being different that caused Penny to develop romantic feelings for him.

Kaley Cuoco believes Penny and Leonard Hofstadter are perfect for each other

In the same interview, Kaley Cuoco was asked if the attraction, in her view, “realistic” or whether it was just an attraction that brought together two different worlds that would never find a happy ending.

She responded that despite their polarizing personality traits, the two have a real attraction and that she loves him despite how weird he is. She said:

100% yes. Absolutely. Of course they’re very opposites, but she’s attracted to him because he’s so different, and Penny is so non-judgmental. She’s just sweet and a good person, and she doesn’t mind that these guys are so weird. She loves them anyway. I think fans would like to see that in the future, but in the meantime there will be some flirting.

She added that Penny was not shown as “unattainable” and gave her an unnecessary attitude.

That’s it, they don’t make Penny so unattainable. In a way she is, but they don’t make her so distant or give the attitude of, “Oh, he’s never going to be able to get that girl.” She’s not mean, she’s not bitchy. They make her very available to him.

Nevertheless, they both ended up falling in love, and the two transformed from odd neighbors into a close couple who displayed a perfect mix of humor and nerdy charm.
